Sri Lanka is an island nation located off of the southeast coast of India. Sri Lanka is a Democratic Socialist Republic that achieved independence from the British on February 4, 1948. Sri Lanka is home to a variety of ethnicities and religions. Historically, Sri Lanka is famous for its export of cinnamon, tea and rubber. In recent years, Sri Lanka's most dynamic economic sectors have been textiles and apparel, food and beverages, telecommunications, insurance and banking.

In addition to its vibrant economy, Sri Lanka boasts a highly diverse ecosystem. It is one of the world's global diversity hotspots, with the highest species density in the world.
