Lack of resources has prevented many communities in Sri Lanka from
gaining access to computers and the Internet, which in turn deprives
the country of citizens with basic skills needed for her to move forward
as a technologically advanced society.
The "wired" group was formed to explore methods of introducing computers and the multitude of resources in the global Internet community to rural areas and under-served urban populations. While computer and Internet connectivity costs have significantly decreased, such facilities are still beyond the reach of most Sri Lankans. We believe that exposure to these tools will breed familiarity and eventually, as usage increases, a new model for accessibility will also emerge.
LAcNet is experimenting and developing new projects which have a positive impact on students in disadvantaged communities. With many projects in initiation phases, we are exploring pilot programs to extend these efforts to other communities with limited financial and infrastructure resources.
These projects critically depend on donations and the goodwill of
persons interested in Sri Lanka. LAcNet groups are supported by volunteers
and voluntary contributions. Comprised of committed volunteers with diverse
expertise, LAcNet is well positioned to be the catalyst in helping such
communities. Our organization offers the framework to efficiently translate
donations and contributions to impact the levels of computer and internet
literacy in needy communities. We are requesting equipment and/or financial
donations as well as volunteers in Sri Lanka and overseas. For donations,
please contact
Daya Weerakkody (replace NOSPAM with @) - Treasurer, LAcNet.
NEW DEVELOPMENTS |
Aluthwewa Maha Vidyalaya Project is first in this series of IT education centers. Located in Polonnaruwa, the school received 8 computer systems which can potentially benefit more than 550 students. The center was officially opened on July 14, 2005.
We will announce other projects as they are implemented.
