Gotukola
Gotukola is one of the most popular vegetables among Sri Lankans. It has great medicinal value too. Gotukola plants need a wet climate to grow well. It prefers to grow in shady wet places and can be seen growing well in the shade of coconut and rubber trees in plantations. One variety grows over the ground like a creeper, but presents us a new plant every six inches. The other variety grows in clumps like mini bushes. The Gotukola leaf is round in shape and wide about four centimeters. The leaf has a long soft stem. Gotukola does not need much looking after. Farmers use local fertilizers such as cow dung for Gotukola. Sri Lankans make a salad with Gotukola. They call it the Gotukola sambal. To prepare this dish; first you have to shred the Gotukola into tiny slivers. The thinner it is the better it is. Then it is mixed with sliced red onions, green chilies, and a little grated fresh coconut. A bit of pounded maldivefish is also added to the salad. Finally it is seasoned with a few drops of lime juice and salt. The other nutritious food made out of Gotukola is, Gotukola gruel. To make the gruel, called "kandha" in Sinhala rice is cooked till soft and mushy. Then it is seasoned with coconut milk and the juice of the gotukola extracted by pounding with a pestle and mortar. Sri Lankan indigenous doctors say that Gotukola is a great remedy for catarrh and it is a fine food for all. Try it, I am sure you'll love it. Anusha Sugani Jayathilaka
