King Dutugemunu

Dutugemunu was one of our greatest kings. His parents were King Kavanthissa and queen Viharamahadevi. King Kavanthissa ruled southern Sri Lanka. The northern part of the country was under the Chola king Elara. Buddhism was neglected. Ancient temples and the holy bodhi tree were over-grown with bushes. Dutugemunu was very angry with this and he decided to defeat the Chola regime. He had a team of giants who were among the bravest people of the country. He fought a fierce battle against Elara and was able to win Anuradhapura back.

Anuradhapura became his kingdom. King Dutugemunu built Ruwanveliseya, Mirisavetiya and Lovamahapaya. He loved his motherland very much.
