To popularize and promote the use of computers and the internet in Sri Lanka.

Message from the Teacher-in-charge Sri Lanka's ancient capital city of Anuradhapura with majestic stupas and carved stone relics relate the story of our rich heritage. It tells us of the grandeur of a city with impressive buildings, that boasted of an ingenious irrigation system built obviously by clever engineers. In addition, Anuradhapura was a great seat of learning. Students from far away countries came here to complete their education. But all that is history and the situation is quite different today. Anuradhapura now is only a regional town in Sri Lanka. Although scenically still beautiful, the effects of the on-going war and poverty are visible everywhere. Education is still highly valued in the community. Parents strive hard to give the children a good education but the children study under very difficult conditions with meagre resources. Computer education was a dream for them and the millennium 2000 was just another page on a calendar for them. The change however came in January 2000, when
LAcNet (Lanka Academic Network) set up a computer centre in the school. For
the first time the children were given the opportunity to touch a computer
free of charge. Now they make optimum use of the five computers. This initiative
is a step in the correct direction, setting the children on the correct path
towards the future. I'd like to compare these students to seedlings, and
I believe the nurturing we do now will enable them to grow into strong trees
that will strengthen our community. |
