CompS2000: Niwaththaka Chethiya High School

Two Day Workshop on
Capacity building through knowledge sharing at
A/Niwaththaka Chethiya Maha Viddyalaya, Anuradhapura
Sep. 20-21, 2002


Summary:

A two day workshop on the Basics of Information Technology was conducted by the Kelaniya University sub group of  LAcNet at the request of the Principle of ANCMV Mr. A. Ratnamalala, and Mr. Deepal Sooriyarachchi, the Teacher in charge of the Computer Center. 

Program - Day I

9 a.m. Opening Ceremony

Lighting the traditional oil lamp by the chief guest ANCMV Vice Principle Mr Sarath.
Welcome speech by Mr Deepal Sooriyarachchi Introduction to the workshop by KLN Subgroup member Mr. Dunken. He explained the importance of computer skills and  introduced the KLN sub
group as friends ANCMV students.

9.30 a.m.. Introduction to computer basics and how computers work Objective: To explain the basics and thus to eliminate the inbuilt  fear of computers
- Hardware, principles, Operating Systems, Software

10.30 a.m.  Introduction to Database Management Systems
Objective: To show that Data base management systems are not only for companies but useful computer tools for anyone to organize their work more efficiently. Explanations and discussion on the needs and uses of Databases and Data base management systems. This was followed by a practical session in MS
Access.

Very enthusiastic response from students.

1- 2 p.m: Lunch
KLN Subgroup review students' feedback to improve the rest of the
program.

2 p.m.- Basics of MS PowerPoint
Objective: To show computers can be fun to use.

Uses of Power Point presentations, using multimedia.

3p.m.
Hardware practicals,  Components of a computer, Understanding errors, assembling a computer

Objective:  To show what the parts of a computer and that even without a University degree that one could easily become a Hardware technician.

4p.m - 5 p.m.
Wrap up session  with a friendly discussion. LAcNet Vision and history.

5PM End of the 1st day workshop with Students

Debriefing with Mr. Deepal.  Assess problems in computers donated by LAcNet.

Day II program was reviewed after reading students' feedback and understanding their level of competence. 



9 a.m.- Basics of programming
Objective: to show the productiveness of computer systems Introduction to software and liveware. Programming concepts, Binary systems,  Job opportunities


11 a.m. - Information Systems (IS)
Objective: To demonstrate how rural communities can use IT to improve business transactions.
Introduction to basics of IS. How to use IT to develop their community

1p.m. - Lunch Interval.

2 p.m.- Networking, Internet, Email & E commerce
Introduction to Networking, Internet Email  and E commerce, users of Networking, History and the future of the Internet, globalization,

Show LAcNet web site, Panhinda, Look@ ANCMV  newsletter etc.

4 p.m. Open Forum

Discussion  on problems that students face; Education, Exams, Advanced Level, University life. IT, Job skills, undertaking volunteer tasks withLAcNet, and sharing their knowledge with other students..

5 p.m: Vote of thanks by students at ANCMV and Mr.
Deepal.Sooriyaarachchi
